DESCRIPTION:Most regattas happen where you’d expect them. Clermont is not most regattas. \nThe 4th Annual Clermont Outback Sailing Regatta is held on Theresa Creek Dam\, Clermont – a stretch of water sitting quietly and patiently in the Queensland outback\, four hours west of Rockhampton. It doesn’t look like a regatta venue. The bush around it\, the ghost gums\, the vast sky – none of it looks like sailing. And yet\, every first weekend of August\, sailors from across Queensland and beyond load up their trailer and make the drive. \nThey come for the racing\, which is genuinely tactical. The winds at Theresa Creek are variable in the way inland waters tend to be – shifting\, layered\, demanding. Handicap and mixed-fleet racing means every class has something to race for\, and the competition is friendly but real. Sailors who think they know every trick usually find one or two more by Sunday afternoon. \nBut they come back for everything else. \nThere are campfires at the water’s edge and shared meals under stars so bright they stop conversations mid-sentence. There’s the country warmth of Clermont – a small town that genuinely leans in when visitors arrive. The people\, the hospitality will make you feel like a regular by Saturday night. \nThis is not a stuffy regatta. There are no airs about it. It’s experienced sailors racing hard\, and first-timers finding out they belong here just as much as anyone else. It’s grey nomads who’ve made the trip an annual event\, and club sailors who’ve been trying to convince their crew for three years that yes\, it’s worth the drive. \nIt always is. \nThe Clermont Outback Sailing Regatta is one of Australia’s most distinctive inland sailing events and it’s still growing.
